The Story
Evo Devo is a concept album that strips away the romanticized veneer of nature to expose the brutal, indifferent, and awe-inspiring mechanics of biology. The album serves as a heavy metal textbook on evolutionary developmental biology. From the microscopic firing of genetic switches and the tragic anatomical flaws of the Babirusa on the album cover, Evo Devo frames existence as a relentless, beautiful struggle governed by the iron laws of mutation, selection, and time.
Anthropocene: The proposed current geological epoch, defined by the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment. Featured in The Anthropocene Inheritance, it frames humanity as the ultimate, inescapable evolutionary selection pressure for the future of life on Earth.
Cytochrome c oxidase / ATP: The enzymes and molecules responsible for cellular respiration and energy transfer within the mitochondria. Featured in The Solar Engine, representing the mechanical, chemical conversion of the sun’s energy into biological life.
Deep Homology: The concept that fundamentally different morphological structures in distant species (like an insect’s eye and a human’s eye) are built using the same ancient genetic toolkit. Explored in Deep Homology, emphasizing the shared, underlying genetic ancestry of all complex life.
Evo-Devo: Evolutionary Developmental Biology. A field of biology that compares the developmental processes of different organisms to infer how their body plans evolved. This is the overarching theme of the album, bridging the gap between how an embryo forms and how a species evolves.
Homeobox (Hox) Genes: “Master switch” genes that control the body plan of an embryo along the head-tail axis, dictating where limbs and organs will grow. The subject of The Toolkit Genes, highlighting how the same core genetic code builds everything from fruit flies to humans.
Phylogeny: The evolutionary history, development, and relationship of a species or group of organisms over millions of years. This represents the “ancient line” or “tree of life” that dictates what biological traits a species inherits from its ancestors.
Red Queen’s Hypothesis: An evolutionary theory stating that species must constantly adapt, evolve, and proliferate simply to survive while pitted against ever-evolving opposing species. The core of The Red Queen’s Race, describing the exhausting, never-ending biological arms race between predator and prey, or host and parasite.
- Spandrel: An architectural term adopted by biology to describe a physical trait that is a byproduct of the evolution of some other characteristic, rather than a direct adaptation. The focus of The Spandrels of San Marco, illustrating that not every part of an animal was designed for a specific purpose; some things are just structural accidents.
